The Tax Identification Number (TIN) request is now temporarily available online.
The measure, taken by the Tax and Customs Authority, came about due to the exceptional situation caused by COVID-19.
Foreign citizens no longer need to go to a tax office to apply for a NIF.
Thus, while the exceptional situation is in force, NIF requests by foreign citizens are made through e-Balcão, by a tax representative (citizen residing in Portugal).
With your tax identification number, in Portugal you can start organizing your life in the country, open a bank account, open an activity, rent a property.
Therefore, the NIF is the first document you must make when living in Portugal.
